 President Karzai deputies misuse government budget

A number of the of the Afghan lawmakers accuse the two deputy president for misuse of the state budget.

The lawmakers are saying that the Mohammad Karim Khalili and Marshal Mohammad Qasim Fahim are spending over $1 million annually in rent expenses.

Lawmaker Shukria Barekzai said rent expenses for Mohammad Karim Khalili and Mr. Fahim’s guest house and home is around $12,000 on monthly basis.

She said the two deputies are also charging the government for guest house expenses, office expenses, security expenses and etc.

Barekzai said, “The amount which I said is around $1 million on annual basis. Their expenses does not include other expenses including for vehicles, guesthouses and etc.”

Shukria Barekzai also said that the presidential office allocated millions of dollars for the construction of residential houses for high level government officials but they are still illegally using the state budget.

In the meantime a number of Kabul residents accused other government officials for misusing state budget. They are also saying that the government officials have closed the streets where they are living.

Afghan lawmakers also criticized the government for saling the Sherpoor land — which was previously a historical site to government officials against a very low price.

The lawmakers urged government officials to use their own houses which they have built in Sherpoor area and do not spend the state budget to rent luxury houses in Kabul city.
