KABUL - The Meshrano Jirga on Tuesday threw its weight behind a lawmaker who recently accused relatives of President Hamid Karzai and his two deputies of being involved in land-grab cases.

MP Hidayatullah Rehai, a member of the Complaints Commission, claimed kin of Karzai, Qasim Fahim and Karim Khalili had grabbed government land.

In retaliation, Karimi sent a letter to Karzai, asking Rehai to produce evidence in support of his claim. The VP called for intervention in the increasing incidents of land-grab by judicial organs, a notion rejected by senators.

Khalili said he was ready to face the law if found guilty, but in the same breath, he sought similar treatment to Rehai if his claims were debunked.

Complaints Commission chief, Zalmai Zabuli, told reporters the penal had compiled a detailed report on illegal occupation of government properties after a nationwide probe.

He said Kalili's complaint was illegal and that they would allow no one to tamper with evidence. He asked Karzai to teach his deputies how to enforce the law.

Zabuli insisted Khalili's brother had illegally occupied 700 acres of land in various parts of Kabul. He said the commission had evidence to prove its claims.
